Passing – Risk vs Reward
Purpose of the Drill:
This drill helps players improve their passing ability and teaches them the principles of risk vs reward.
How it Works:
- Create two teams with equal numbers.
- Set up 3 zones. Zone 3 should be set to your player’s maximum passing distance or a distance that gives your team a maximum reward. Zone 2 should be set to a safe and comfortable passing distance.
- The passing player of the attacking team stands in zone 1 (with or without a player defending the pass).
- Zone 2 and 3 have an equal number of players (defenders & attackers). The number of players in each zone depends on your sport and the size of your zones.
- The passer attempts to pass the ball to a team member in Zone 2 or Zone 3. And continues to do this for 30 seconds.
- A successful pass into Zone 2 earns the attacking team 1 point, however an unsuccessful pass into Zone 2 deducts 1 point from the team’s total.
- A successful pass into Zone 3 earns the attacking team 5 points, however an unsuccessful pass into Zone 3 deducts 5 points from the team’s total.
- Teams take it in turn to attack and defend.
- Players rotate positions after each minute (after each team has 1 attempt each of passing).
- The team with the most points, after everyone on the team has had an attempt of passing, is declared the winner.
Coaching Tips:
- Players can win the game for their team whilst attacking and defending.
- Attacking receivers should work together to make passes easier for the passer (block, create space, talk/ direct to each other, etc).
- Defenders should work together for complete defence (swap opponents, zone off, talk/direct each other, etc).
