LADDER WATCHING
Quick background: the U14 boys I coach have been fortunate to have won their first 4 games and we were coming up to play the only other undefeated team. One of the parents advised me that their son was quite nervous/anxious about the upcoming game because they didn’t want to lose. I wasn’t aware of this and I do advise my players that if the execute the basics really well and control the ball it is likely they will come out on top on the scoreboard.
As it turned out we were fortunate to have won the game…now we are 50…but my concern is some players will continue to focus on the Win / Loss record and not the execution of skills. I am going to stress to the players that losing doesn’t mean you didn’t try or didn’t execute well….and winning doesn’t always mean you played well and executed well. The challenge is to be better as individuals each week and hopefully by creating high standards to execute / behave will be more beneficial than just the win / loss record. But, the boys are cognisant of where they are on the ladder and where they want to be on the ladder. They will lose a game or 3 or 4 this season…but it will be how they handle that / bounce back.
